From Failure to Fortune: Embracing Imperfection on the Entrepreneurial Journey
Understanding the pain points of individuals within a community involves thoroughly examining their needs, frustrations, and areas of dissatisfaction. This process may involve conducting surveys, interviews, or observations to gain insights into the daily challenges faced by students, faculty, and staff. By identifying these pain points, entrepreneurs can tailor their innovations to meet the specific needs of the campus population, thereby enhancing the value proposition of their start-up and increasing the likelihood of success.
Hypothesis Definition
Before conducting out-of-classroom interviews, we, as students and aspiring entrepreneurs, developed initial hypotheses about the issues faced by the university community at Central Mindanao University (CMU). We hypothesized that students, faculty, and other CMU stakeholders were experiencing problems with waste management, particularly in the proper disposal and collection of waste. Additionally, we identified issues with poor ventilation in some college buildings, leading to discomfort due to high temperatures. Signal quality problems in certain areas were also noted, affecting students' ability to submit assignments and conduct research. Before brainstorming further, we tested whether these problems were indeed experienced by the CMU community.
This initiative aimed to ensure that our proposed solutions would effectively address the target market's problems, a critical factor for the success of any venture. Identifying the right issues to tackle is crucial for the success of our start-up.
Hypothesis Testing
To test our initial hypotheses:
1. We approached 50 students for face-to-face interviews using semi-structured questions, allowing follow-up queries for deeper discussions on specific issues.
2. We obtained consent from respondents for photo documentation and asked open-ended questions such as:
- What problems have you encountered at CMU?
- What inconveniences have you experienced?
- What solutions do you think could resolve these problems?
3. The results of the hypothesis testing were positive. While not all hypothesized problems were mentioned, several key issues were confirmed:
- Students reported signal quality issues in specific campus areas.
- There was a lack of proper waste management and garbage handling.
- Some students faced delays in attending classes due to the distance between colleges and an inefficient transport system.
- Delays in information and announcements were also noted due to issues such as signal strength and device availability.
On a typical busy day at the university, we approached potential respondents with politeness and clarity, explaining our intention to ask them a few questions. Despite many declines, we achieved our goal of collecting responses from 50 interviewees.
During the interviews, we engaged in casual conversations to make respondents comfortable sharing their opinions. We agreed to requests for anonymity from those who allowed photo documentation, ensuring they felt safe in expressing their views.
From the 50 respondents, we gathered substantial insights. The issues reported included waste management, poor signal strength, challenges with schedule and distance between colleges, and delays in information dissemination. We also asked respondents for their proposed solutions, which provided us with a foundation to innovate and develop a start-up based on the target market's needs.
Team Decision
Based on the interview results, our team decided to develop an information system benefiting students with technological devices. The initial start-up plan includes creating an app that would:
- Gamify waste management, rewarding students for proper waste disposal.
- Provide a faster and more efficient platform for information dissemination.
- Secure data from unauthorized access.
- Integrate a public transport system to reduce travel time between colleges.
- Offer an "all-in-one guide" to local restaurants, cafés, shops, and their services.
- Serve as an investment hub for student entrepreneurs and potential investors.
Team’s Options
Given the problems identified, we had three venture project options. The first option, building signal towers or repeaters, was dismissed as it did not present a new venture. The university could address this issue with existing technology.
The second option, converting trash into energy, was also deemed unfeasible. Although beneficial for the environment, it was not profitable and required significant resources, including maintenance and funding, beyond our current capabilities.
The final option, developing an information system (app or website), was selected as it was the most feasible and profitable. This option aligned with our skills and knowledge, making it the most viable venture project.
Lessons Learned (Team)
Reflecting on the interviews, it's clear that recognizing problems and understanding their root causes are essential for finding effective solutions. This process underscores the importance of proactive problem-solving and informed decision-making in driving positive change. By actively seeking answers and exploring the nuances of each issue, we can address underlying causes and create more impactful and sustainable solutions. The interviews highlight the value of curiosity and a willingness to explore all angles, empowering us to make informed decisions that drive meaningful progress.
Moreover, this experience emphasizes the transformative power of problem-solving skills in both personal and professional contexts. Whether navigating complex projects or addressing challenges in our personal lives, the ability to identify problems, analyze them critically, and develop tailored solutions is invaluable. A proactive problem-solving mindset equips us to overcome obstacles and create positive change in our communities.
Reflecting on my entrepreneurial journey, I've learned the importance of humility and collaboration. Seeking guidance and embracing a community-oriented approach highlight the collaborative nature of entrepreneurship, emphasizing the significance of collective effort and support in achieving our goals. The feedback and constructive criticism we've received have fueled our determination and renewed our purpose in pursuing entrepreneurship. I'm inspired by successful entrepreneurs' relentless curiosity and drive, motivating me to challenge the status quo and explore new opportunities for growth.
Acknowledging that entrepreneurship is a journey filled with challenges and setbacks has been a sobering yet empowering realization. Each obstacle presents an opportunity for learning and growth, reinforcing that failure is not the end but a steppingstone toward greater achievement.
